United Way of Saskatoon and Area and the Saskatoon and District Labour Council (SDLC) held its 20th annual Labour Community Service Award Dinner on Friday, February 9, 2018. The Labour Community Service Award Dinner is an annual event held to recognize and honour a union member who has demonstrated outstanding service and dedication to our community through volunteer work.
The recipient of the 2018 award is Marilyn Barlow, member of Saskatoon SUN District Council. She is a union activist; political activist and community activist. Marilyn has been a SUN member for 41 years and found her true calling in the Emergency Department at Saskatoon City Hospital. She has worked in many capacities for her local and provincial union bodies. She also believes in serving her community and regularly looks for ways to become engaged and participate in initiatives that improve the lives of those less fortunate. For example, Marilyn organized 2 collection drives for the 2017 Tampon Tuesday® initiative – one at Saskatoon City Hospital and one at the SUN Annual General Meeting. Over the years, she always found the time to mentor many students and new RNs. She recently became a foster parent to a teenage boy and is the caregiver of her teenage grandson. Marilyn also serves as a representative for the Saskatchewan Registered Nurses’ Association.
Fairness and social justice come naturally to the 2018 recipient. Her colleagues call her a “beloved coworker” and admire her for her integrity and strong work ethic.
Congratulations Marilyn!
The Labour Community Service Award celebration is co-hosted annually by United Way of Saskatoon and Area and the Saskatoon and District Labour Council.
