2010 Labour Community Service Award

Do you know a union member who has shown a commitment not only to the union, but also to the
community at large? Would you like to honour this person and see her or him receive the
recognition they deserve? The person you nominate does not have to be a member of your own
union or local.

National Day of Mourning, April 28, 2009

 Tuesday, April 28, 2009
 7:00 pm
 Frances Morrison Library
 311 - 23rd St. E.

The theme for the 2009 CLC National Day of Mourning is “Enough is enough! It's time to enforce the law and bring employers who kill, to justice." We encourage all affiliates to make Health and Safety a priority for organizing in the workplace.  The CLC will be pushing the federal Government to make compliance and enforcement a reality. Federations of labour and labour councils, with the assistance of your union, must push provincial-territorial regulators to act to save lives.

The CLC first marked the event in 1984 and since then has grown into a worldwide event observed by unions, central labour bodies, labour councils, municipalities and national governments. The Day of Mourning or Workers Memorial Day, as it is called in Europe, is observed in over a hundred countries worldwide. It has been formerly endorsed by the International Trade Union Congress. Several countries are in the process of formally recognizing the Day, following Canada's example in 1991.

It has been 25 years since the CLC first established the National Day of Mourning. We still have workplaces where workers are injured and killed on the job at an increasing rate. This tells us that we must do more to save the lives and livelihood of workers in Canada.

On this day we mourn for those who have lost their lives. However, it is increasingly important to continue to fight for the living.

Canadian Labour Congress BetterChoice Campaign

Canadian Labour Congress BetterChoice Campaign

Canadian working families want politicians to listen to them and work for them.

The CLC BetterChoice Campaign starts from the simple idea that people who work for wages are the majority of citizens and the majority of people who vote. So politicians should listen to their interests. In other words, political parties and candidates must be made to feel that people will vote for them or against them on the issues that affect their families, communities and workplaces.

The BetterChoice Campaign promotes the issues that the majority of working Canadians support.

In 2008, the Canadian Labour Congress and its unions will campaign to move forward a series of issues that are important to working people, their families and their communities, with the view of putting them squarely on the election’s agenda – of making them vote-determining.

The five priority issues for working families are:

  • protecting jobs and decent wages

  • accessible education and skills training

  • affordable prescription drugs (through a national ‘pharmacare’ program)

  • pension protection

  • quality child care and early learning
